    The Effect of Foreign Bank Presence on Domestic Banks Performance: An Evidence from a Developing Economy

    This study examines the effect of foreign bank presence on the behaviour of domestic banks by using the annual data of 37 commercial banks comprising of 7 foreign and 30 domestic banks for the time period of 2007 to 2011, to investigate the effect of foreign bank presence  five banking ratios, net interest margin, return on assets, overhead, cost to income and nonperforming loans using panel regression analysis employing bank specific fixed effect model. As a developing country case, the results suggest that the increase in foreign bank share effects the interest margins and profitability of domestic banks in a decreasing manner. It wouldn't be erroneous to express that foreign banks have a positive effect on the competitive environment of domestic banks increasing overall banking standard in Pakistan, the licensing policies should be further liberalized to let new entrants further improve the domestic financial intermediation system.&nbsp

    Competition and market contestability of banks: evidence from emerging financial market

    The study is an attempt to investigate the nature of competition and market contestability of 35 Pakistani banks for the period of 2007-2011 by employing Panzar and Rosse (PR-model). The test of competition overall sample (2007-2011) suggest that banks in Pakistan in state of monopolistic competition and market is in equilibrium. The sub sample (2007-2009) result of competition and equilibrium are similar as for sample period (2007-2011) suggesting that revenue produced during this period is state of monopolistic competition. Finally the results of sample period (2010-2011) suggest that banks in Pakistan are instate of perfect competition however, the market in not in long-run equilibrium. The results have interesting policy implications; it is suggested to encourage the foreign banks presence to improve the competitive condition of banking industry so that to ensure the exit and entrance of banks in the industry to increase the competition and produce the variety of product to improve banks performance and customer satisfaction.&nbsp

    Effectiveness of plain X-ray in detection of fish and chicken bone foreign body in upper aerodigestive tract

    Abstract OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of plain film radiology in the detection of fish and chicken bones in the upper aerodigestive tract. METHODS: This retrospective chart review was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised medical charts of patients who had undergone oesophagoscopy for removal of fish and chicken bone from 1990 to 2015.SPSS 19 was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Of the 24 patients, foreign body was detected on X-ray in 7(29.2%) and through fibre optic laryngoscopy in 13(54.2%).All the patients underwent surgical intervention for removal of the foreign body. Also, 19(79.2%) patients underwent direct laryngoscopy and 5(16.7%) required oesophagoscopy. The sensitivity with X-ray was 15% and specificity was zero. The sensitivity of fibre optic laryngoscopy in comparison to intra-operative findings was 65% and the specificity was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: X-ray was not found to be an ideal modality to diagnose fish or chicken bone impaction in the upper aerodigestive tract

    The interest rate-exchange rate nexus in China: A DCCA cross-correlation coefficient with sliding window approach

    This study aims to investigate the dynamics of the interest rates and exchange rates during the pandemic-induced crisis in the Chinese economy. In the study, rolling window detrended cross-correlation analysis (DCCA) was used. The DCCA coefficient was extracted based on detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). The data used in the study are the daily data of the period from 2/1/2019 to 7/5/2021. The results obtained in the study suggest the presence of positive cross-correlation between China’s interest rate and exchange rate after the COVID-19 pandemic, and they also report the existence of weak positive cross-correlation during the initial days of the pandemic. However, the weak positive cross-correlation became stronger over time. Higher interest rates are associated with higher exchange rates after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of the research study have policy implications in that conventional higher interest rates introduced to defend the exchange rate might fail during pandemic-induced crises

    Use of endoscope in teaching of otolaryngology residents about site and size of tympanic membrane perforation and its impact on degree of hearing loss in adult patients: A cross sectional study

    Objective: To determine the association between site and size of perforation of the tympanic membrane and the level of conductive hearing.Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2015 to October 2016 at Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi and comprised patients with tympanic membrane perforation without any other middle-ear disease. Karl-Storz Rigid Endoscope attached to a camera was used to take pictures of the tympanic membrane. Site of the perforation was determined using a vertical line to divide the membrane into two anterior and posterior halves. Size of the perforation was calculated as a percentage of the total membrane using Image J software. Data analysis was done using Stata 12.Results: Of the 55 patients, 29(53%) were males and 26(47%) were females. The overall mean age was 33+/-15 years. With every 5% increase in the size of perforation, the hearing loss increased by 1 decibel. A difference of 5.5 decibels was noted between anterior and posterior perforations of similar size.Conclusion: Hearing loss increased with increase in the size of perforation

    PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF A MULTICARRIER MIMO SYSTEM BASED ON DFT-PRECODING AND SUBCARRIER MAPPING

    The ever-increasing end user demands are instigating the development of innovative methods targeting not only data rate enhancement but additionally better service quality in each subsequent wireless communication standard. This quest to achieve higher data rates has compelled the next generation communication technologies to use multicarrier systems e.g. orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), while also relying on the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. This paper is focused on implementing a MIMO-OFDM system and on using various techniques to optimize it in terms of the bit-error rate performance. The test case considered is a system implementation constituting the enabling technologies for 4G and beyond communication systems. The bit-error rate optimizations considered are based on preceding the OFDM modulation step by Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) while also considering various subcarrier mapping schemes. MATLAB-based simulation of a 2 × 2 MIMO-OFDM system exhibits a maximum of 2 to 5 orders of magnitude reduction in bit-error rate due to DFT-precoding and subcarrier mapping respectively at high signal-to-noise ratio values in various environments. A 2-3dBs reduction in peak-to-average power ratio due to DFT-precoding in different environments is also exhibited in the various simulations

    Static anti-windup compensator design for locally Lipschitz systems under input and output delays

    This paper proposes a static anti-windup compensator (AWC) design methodology for the locally Lipschitz nonlinear systems, containing time-varying interval delays in input and output of the system in the presence of actuator saturation. Static AWC design is proposed for the systems by considering a delay-range-dependent methodology to consider less conservative delay bounds. The approach has been developed by utilizing an improved Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, locally Lipschitz nonlinearity property, delay-interval, delay derivative upper bound, local sector condition, L2 gain reduction from exogenous input to exogenous output, improved Wirtinger inequality, additive time-varying delays, and convex optimization algorithms to obtain convex conditions for AWC gain calculations. In contrast to the existing results, the present work considers both input and output delays for the AWC design (along with their combined additive effect) and deals with a more generic locally Lipschitz class of nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated via simulations for a nonlinear DC servo motor system, possessing multiple time-delays, dynamic nonlinearity and actuator constraints
